Diet books and fad diets have created a multi-billion dollar industry. With people spending so much money on dieting, you’d think that our country would be becoming more healthy instead of more obese. However, with obesity constantly on the rise, isn’t it practically obvious that diets just DON’T WORK? Moreover, if you or someone you know is a dieter or a yo-yo dieter, isn’t their food-life miserable? Counting calories, counting points, obsessing over food and feeling guilty, talking about food, etc. I believe in a more holistic approach to eating – which does not include restrictions, diets, or guilt!
Here are some tips for eating healthy and how to NOT be on a diet:
- Stop counting calories. Every calorie is not equal. 2000 calories of fast food is not the same as 2000 calories of lean meat and vegetables. Your body uses each set of these calories differently.
- Eat protein ever 3-4 hours. Keep your blood sugar levels consistent by nourishing your body ever few hours to prevent mid-day tiredness and a ravenous pre-dinner appetite.
- Read food labels: Do your staple foods include tons of ingredients that you can’t even pronounce, let alone haven’t even heard of? These ingredients are most likely chemicals that your body has become addicted to.
- Try to reduce the amount of these foods that you eat and replace them with something else: reaching chocolate bars? You’re craving sugar, so get some fruit ASAP. Reaching for potato chips? Your body is craving carbs and salt, so bake a sweet potato or salt some boiled potatoes.
- Add fruits and vegetables to your diet and notice how your body transitions from craving sugary and fatty foods to craving salads, pure fruits, and foods that aren’t made by chemicals.
