Looking to simplify your life and destress? Many of the happiest people in the world live with less. They don’t look to concrete things to bring them joy, they look to experiences instead. They live in the present, and don’t over complicate things.
Simplifying your life requires effort, you’ll have to shy away from that impulse to over complicate (and overthink) things. It means you must be in the present.
Here are some easy ways to simplify your life.
Unplug: Everyday take an hour to unplug completely. Turn off your phone, power down your computer, turn off the television. No technology at all. If you want to read, make it a ‘real’ book, not your e-reader. Take this hour to simply unwind. Read, take a bath, chat with your loved ones (face to face) go for a walk. Play with your dog. Meditate or do yoga. Just take the time to get in touch with yourself. Can’t take an hour? Star with just 15 minutes and work your way up.
Rid Yourself of Toxic People: Evaluate the people in your life. How do you feel when you are with them? Do they suck your energy or make you feel bad about yourself? If so, this is a person you need to cut from your life. You need only positive, uplifting people around you! Simplifying your social life is a good thing. The relationships will serve you better and won’t stress you out.
Meditate: Meditation has been proven to help with nearly every aspect of our lives. It can calm a crazy day, bring focus to our minds, improve our overall demeanor and just help us be healthier. But it’s hard. If you don’t already meditate, start by just sitting quietly for 2 or 3 minutes each day and then add on. You can find great guided meditation apps online and on your phone which will help you get started. Meditation will help you find that inner peace you’re seeking.
Make a List: Instead of making a to do list, make a list of all the things you want in your life. This will help you focus on your happiness, and may even inspire you to go out and achievesomethingyou’ve always wanted to (write that bestseller! Climb a mountain!)
Celebrate: Speaking of happiness, why not celebrate life’s little victories? We tend to let those little things go unnoticed, and we only celebrate the ‘big’ milestones. Instead, the next time something good happens to you, celebrate it! Got a pat on the back at work? Celebrate! Finally cleared that pile of laundry/mending/bills? Celebrate! Whatever it is, make sure to take a moment and smile about your victories.
Tackle the Mail: Speaking of bills, make sure you pay them right away. When the mail comes in, or the e-bills, deal with it. Paying bills right now will keep you from stressing about them later and you won’t spend money you don’t have. Get rid of that stack of mail; touch it once and be done with it.
Pay in Cash: And when it comes to bills, one less bill would be nice, right? So don’t rely on credit cards so heavily. Pay in cash, this way you know you have the money. This won’t work for everything of course, but for small purchases it can really help you save money and have a bit less stress in your life.
Take Time to Smell the Roses: Stop and chat! When you’re out for a stroll, speak to your neighbors. When you’re at the grocery store, standing in line, make small talk. Compliment others. Make someone else smile, and you’ll smile, too. Those smiles are so uplifting and can carry you through the day.
These small changes can really help simplify your life, and help you destress.
