Choosing the Right Yoga Bolster for You

Yoga bolsters are dense pillows of varying sizes used to support particular parts of the body in different asanas. Like other yoga props, they help take the strain off the body as you ease from pose to pose.

Used mainly in restorative yoga, these cushions provide not only comfort but support for the body to achieve the best circulation of blood flow.

A few ways they are used for this are listed below:

  • Leg Circulation: Placed under the knees during Savasana (corpse pose). Encourage a feeling of floating.

  • Abdomen & Gut Circulation: Stick a bolster under the lower back for a supportive backbend (fish pose, bridge or easing into wheel).

  • Chest Circulation: Lengthwise along the mid to upper back, neck, and head to open the heart chakra.

With so many bolster sizes and shapes to choose from, it can be difficult to figure out which one is right for your practice. Below, you'll find an image giving a visual differentiation, comparing our selection of bolsters.

Still need help deciding which one is right for you? Let's walk you through the decision-making process:

  1. What Shape . . . Round or Rectangular?

Both are great and can be individually useful within your practice. For studios, having both offers versatility and allows your students to decide for themselves which bolster they need at different times.

Chose Rectangular: has a flat surface and a lower height which provides a more stable surface area, and allows the body to fold deeper into forwarding bends.

Chose Round: its shape offers a larger diameter, which is better for opening the chest or heart chakra. Has a taller height than the rectangular, which provides more support for forwarding bends.

2. Which Size and Weight?

{{Supportive & Max Support}}

Supportive Bolsters are the same size as the Max Support Bolsters. The difference lies in their weight and support offered. The Max Support is heavier and meant for more weight, but can also be used as a firmer support for those in need.

These bolsters are the most popular choice due to their large size, as they cover the most surface area for your practice.

Better for a studio setting or at home use than for travel.

Supportive Round Bolster: 28 x 10 inches, weighing 7.05 pounds.

Supportive Rectangular Bolster: 24 x 12 inches, weighing 6.39 pounds.

Max Support Deluxe Round Bolster: 28 x 10 x 2.5 inches, weighing 9.47 pounds.

Max Support Deluxe Rectangular Bolster: 24 x 6 x 12 x 3, weighing 9.03 pounds.

More compact in size, these bolsters are great for children or smaller yogis. Offering great support under the knees, thighs, and neck, these bolsters are great for those who use bolsters in their regular practice as well as in restoration.

As the most narrow bolster, it is also popular to use for lumbar support (lower back).

Every yogi is looking to improve circulation and aid in relaxation techniques. That's why bolsters are the perfect prop for everyone. Not just another pillow, bolsters assist you in your practice by lifting your body up or applying pressure where needed.
