What Happened When I Tried this 14 Day Lemon Detox

Searching the web for an easy fix to my ever-changing body, I came across an image titled “Lose 22 pounds in 2 weeks with this Lemon Diet.” I read it over, intrigued by its simple request, “drink watered-down lemon juice every morning an hour before breakfast.” . . . Okay, what’s the catch?

The diet starts with 1 lemon and a cup of water, gradually working up to 6 lemons and 6 cups of water (a lot more than I thought), descending back down to end the detox again with 1 lemon and 1 cup of water. Easy... right?

ADVANTAGES

It was and it wasn’t. Drinking a pitcher of lemon water an hour before breakfast has its challenges, however, I did notice:

  • Energy levels skyrocketed

  • Digestive system was smoother

  • Decreased appetite

  • Lost a few pounds

Along with the advantages, I did notice a change in my body. My stomach wasn’t as bloated and the improvement in my digestive system did help me lose weight! Being that I’m 130 lbs, I would say losing 2 lbs is a great outcome considering I didn’t really change my diet or exercise habits. I would say the more weight starting this diet, the better results since it really does clean up your insides.

DISADVANTAGES

About mid-way through the detox, I noticed some other changes my body started going through as well. They weren’t the end of the world, however, I did end up making adjustments to personalize the detox for my body type. The disadvantages I started noticing included:

  • Lower Face Acne (Check out Acne Mapping Below)

  • Upset Stomach

  • Frequent Bathroom Breaks

All are expected when detoxing and cleansing the body, however with lemons you need to be a bit more careful. Lemons are extremely beneficial to the body, however, too much of such an acidic fruit can end up doing more harm than good if not monitored properly.

“The acids in lemon juice can cause gastrointestinal side effects. Acidic foods may worsen symptoms of gastrointestinal reflux disease or GERD, and some people get an upset stomach when they consume too much ascorbic acid. ... Protect your teeth by rinsing with water when you're done drinking lemon juice.” -Livestrong.com

I ended up stopping the detox halfway through, with the notion to start including lemon water into a majority of my mornings for its benefits, but not at such an intense rate.

Conclusion:

I would try this detox, but make any necessary adjustments as your body tells you to do so. I would also advise to start including lemons into your morning on a regular basis!
